Think of your outdoor lighting as a puzzle with many pieces. Now look around and see if you have any solar outdoor lights plugged into that puzzle,if not you might just be overspending for your outdoor lighting. Some might even be thinking at this point,” Why couldn’t I just replace all of my outdoor lights with solar outdoor lights”?. That’s a valid question indeed, one that i will be delving into on this article for certain. What will you come away with when you are done reading this? You will know what solar outdoor lights are made up of,how they work, the best applications for them and overall a better idea of whether they would be right for you. Let’s get started.

What Are Solar Outdoor Lights and How Do They Work?

Sometimes also known as solar lamps they obviously work from being charged by the sun. The main components of solar outdoor lights are not much different than a normal outdoor light except they also have a battery and a photovoltaic solar panel that catches the suns rays to charge the battery. During the day they charge up and then in the evening, usually set to a timer, they come on and will last as long as 8-10 hours normally. The degree of lighting they provide and how long they last depends solely on the amount of energy they were able to harness while it was daylight. In general for this reason they are normally used in conjunction with low voltage lamps or LED outdoor lights and rarely can provide the same lighting capabilities as inline wired electrical lighting.

If for instance it is a cloudy day then you will not receive the highest level of benefit that evening from solar outdoor lights. In other words you at the mercy of the weather when it comes to the important benefits of outdoor lights. This becomes their main drawback when thinking of using them for the purpose of security lighting. That being said let’s move on to what they are normally used for.

What Are Solar Outdoor Lights Used For?

Quickly I want to mention that you can wire your solar outdoor lights to a system being powered by much larger solar panels and batteries, but in the long run the price of that equipment is why it’s not a common practice. here’s where the basic stand alone solar outdoor lights will fit into your outdoor lighting puzzle.

Anywhere in your yard where you do not feel that you need brighter or continuous light for the purpose of security and safety may be a great place to cut down on your electric bill and energy usage by installing solar outdoor lights. These might include, but are not limited too, pathway lights, landscaping lights, swimming pool lights or staircase accent lights. In most of these applications you can find models available that are right in line and sometimes less expensive than the electric powered equivalent. Even if priced a little higher they may still be worth the investment for the energy savings alone.

So Are Solar Outdoor Lights The Right Fit For Your Lighting Puzzle?

When you keep in mind all of the benefits and uses for outdoor lights in general you can clearly see why solar outdoor lights could be a drawback for a main lighting solution. They do have their place in the yard though and can make a great addition to the big picture. They are available in as many make and models as normal electric lights are at competitive prices,so you would never have to sacrifice going off the path of your overall theme you have envisioned for your outdoor lighting. My suggestion is try some out in one small area where you will need some accent lighting and see for yourself if they will provide what you are needing. You may find that solar outdoor lights are the perfect fit for your puzzle.
